A roundtable discussion jointly organized by BNNRC and Prothom Alo highlighted the urgent need to address technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) in Bangladesh. Speakers emphasized that while digital technologies have improved access to services, they have also increased risks such as online harassment, identity fraud, doxxing, and image-based abuse—disproportionately affecting women, adolescents, and gender-diverse individuals.
The discussion called for stronger policy and institutional frameworks, improved access to justice, greater accountability of technology platforms, and increased public awareness at all levels. Participants also recommended measures such as national ID-based verification for social media accounts and country-specific services from global platforms. Data presented at the event revealed that 89% of women social media users have experienced online violence, with those aged 18–30 being the most vulnerable.
Overall, the roundtable underscored the need for coordinated, multi-stakeholder action to prevent TFGBV, ensure protection, and provide effective, survivor-centered support.
BNNRC is implementing the project titled “Strengthening Resilience Against Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) and Promoting Digital Development.” The initiative is being carried out under the Nagorikata: Civic Engagement Fund (CEF), with technical support from GFA Consulting Group and funding from the Embassy of Switzerland, Global Affairs Canada (GAC), and the European Union (EU).
- To bring together policymakers, media, academia, civil society, technology stakeholders, and human rights actors to promote coordinated dialogue, deepen public and institutional awareness, and identify actionable strategies to prevent, mitigate, and ensure accountability for technology-facilitated gender-based violence in Bangladesh.
